Pictured is a Hawker Siddeley Harrier GR1 of 1 Squadron taking off during sea trials with the Royal Navy aircraft carrier, HMS Ark Royal in May 1971. During the Harrier's service the RAF positioned the bulk of the aircraft in West Germany to defend against a potential invasion of Western Europe by the Warsaw Pact forces; the unique abilities of the Harrier allowed the RAF to disperse their forces away from vulnerable airbases. *Some of these images have had some dodging and burning done and have been retouched to remove detritus and dust and scratch marks only* ------------------------------------------------------- © Crown Copyright 2013 Photographer: Air Historical Branch-RAF Image DDC-45163613-crop.jpg from www.defenceimages.mod.uk This image is available for high resolution download at www.defenceimagery.mod.uk subject to the terms and conditions of the Open Government License at www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/doc/open-government-licence/.
